1. Background

Reyaz Ahmad is a ten-year-old child suffering from Chronic Osteomyelitis, a long-term bone infection that caused him severe pain. Initially, he was injured, after which swelling and pain appeared in his leg.

The first local doctor performed surgery and removed the damaged bone, but the full condition of the bone was not clearly identified. A second doctor later diagnosed a bone fracture through radiology and referred the patient to Indira Gandhi Children’s Hospital in Kabul.

 2. Incident Description

Riaz Ahmad had previously experienced a fall, but at first he did not realize that his leg was fractured. Later, swelling and pain appeared in his leg.

  • First Local Doctor: Performed surgery and removed the blackened/damaged bone, but the full condition of the bone was not determined.
  • Second Local Doctor: Through medical imaging, it was confirmed that the bone was fractured and the patient was referred to Indira Gandhi Children’s Hospital.

Support from the Organization:
On 13-08-2022, the patient was registered in the hospital through the organization Children Need Us. Later, on 08-12-2022, he was sent to Germany for complete medical treatment.

In Germany, his host family was Pariwash Bayat, originally from Afghanistan. Reyaz Ahmad received treatment there for approximately one year and returned to Afghanistan on 29-03-2023.

Currently, Reyaz Ahmad lives in the care center of the same organization. On 25-07-2025, due to infection and discharge from the wound in his leg, he was referred to Hiwad Shifa Hospital inside the country.

3. Initial Medical Intervention:

At first, treatment was provided locally by local doctors. When Riaz Ahmad’s condition worsened, one of the doctors diagnosed that his leg was fractured and referred him to Indira Gandhi Children’s Hospital.

He remained under treatment there for some time. Later, on 13-08-2022, he was officially registered at the hospital through the organization Children Need Us, and on 08-12-2022 he was sent to Germany for complete medical treatment.

4. International Treatment Phase

In Germany, his host family was Pariwash Bayat, an Afghan national. Reyaz Ahmad remained under treatment there for nearly one year and returned to Afghanistan on 29-03-2023.

5. Reintegration & Educational Progress

Reyaz Ahmad returned to Afghanistan in 2023 and is still under the support and supervision of the KBU organization.

During this time:

  • He enrolled in school.
  • He learned the German language.
  • He received additional educational training.
  • He benefited from the support of experienced teachers.

He is currently in Grade 5 and lives in the care and supervision center of the Children Need Us organization.

6. Challenges & Resilience Analysi

Current Condition:

  • No additional surgery is currently required.
  • Regular wound dressing and care by a specialist doctor are necessary.
  • Continuous medical examinations are required to monitor his condition.
